This weekend I got the opportunity to volunteer at the Texas Chargers Retreat. I was assigned to be a group leader for 9 - 15 children with chargers syndrome, within that opportunity I got the honor of meeting amazing children plus the parents. Throughout my volunteer experience, there was an amazing sweet child who snatched my heart. This is my friend Ethan Lee Medina, I met him yesterday. Ethan is very sweet. Texture is the way he views the world, he loved to feel every he touches to know where he is walking or whether he wants to play with it or not. And if he doesn't like the texture, you will know that he doesn't play with that. The more I spent the day with Ethan, the more my American Sign Language got freshened up. Also, the more chance I got to learn even more signs. Here is one thing about Ethan, he loves stairs, he can climb the stairs up and down without getting any tired. The stairs cheer him up any time he needs a cheering moment. I am pretty convinced that he could climb heldenfels: the stairs of terror, with no complaint going up and down with no rest breaks. You see charger syndrome doesn't have Ethan, Ethan has charger syndrome. He doesn't let that stop him from doing the things he loves because his disability didn't define him. The dope thing about being in the world of people with special needs is you get to see how they all experience and view the world a different way. The dopest part is it's all so fascinating and inspiring. Ethan taught me a lot, but the one thing he showed me is to complain less about the things I have the opportunity to do and have (whether they are good or bad) and appreciate each an everything. A good leader once said in my leadership training class, "Be comfortable being uncomfortable." We tend to see the disability before seeing the people, not realizing how much they can inspire us if we get to know them.
